Direct profiling is advantageous when it is too expensive or difficult to use a test piece, when products frequently vary in size, shape or coatings, when it is possible to apply thermocouples without damaging the product finish, or when sensors can be applied and removed quickly on-line during normal production. 31 Indirect profiling is suitable when thermocouples cannot be attached directly to the product without causing finish damage, when standard products are processed day after day, either when the line can be stopped or space provided for an addition of a test piece during standard process or when a test piece can be manufactured that accurately mimics a standard product.
